“Shrine” is a fabricated microcosm, where centuries of shared beliefs, superstitions and history are reimagined as a dazzling explosion of pop art and post-modernist irony. An exhibition which tackles grandiose themes of life, spirituality and mortality with teenage arrogance and child-like wonderment, resulting in art that is both raw and intimate, disjointed and coherent all at once.

Aquilina’s work is self-aware and it invites the viewers to reflect on the duality of nature, humanity and spirituality – universal concepts which are deeply rooted and explored from within the complex island microcosm. 

Shrine is the debut solo exhibition of Alexandra Aquilina and is curated by Lisa Gwen. The exhibition is hosted by MUŻA – Heritage Malta
