Homo Melitensis: (Still) An Incomplete Inventory in 19 Chapters |
3rd October - 2nd November 2025
Originally Malta’s Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, the project returns to the Island as part of a wider programme showcasing the country’s internationally acclaimed cultural works.
‘Homo Melitensis: (Still) An Incomplete Inventory in 19 Chapters’ explores what it means to live in Malta today, refusing to offer a final answer to the perennial question, “Who are we?”. Over the past two decades, Malta has experienced rapid social, cultural and economic changes, influencing how Maltese see themselves, their values and their everyday lives. This exhibition reflects on those shifts by bringing together artworks, everyday objects, and museum artefacts in one flowing installation, rather than separate displays. First presented in 2017, Homo Melitensis returns in an updated version with new works and references to recent events. It draws on memories, images, and stories that many will find familiar, offering space to reflect on Maltese identity in a time of change.
Commissioned by Arts Council Malta.
