Northern paintings in the MUŻA collection – The 17th-century Netherlandish works |

Krystle Attard Trevisan

Masterclass |

20 October 2021

The Netherlandish paintings of the 17th century in the MUŻA collection have received much less attention than the Roman Catholic Baroque paintings of the same period from Malta, Italy, France and Spain. The style of painting of the Protestant Northern Netherlands is different. It is more restrained, religious works are smaller and fewer in number, and new secular genres were developed. In this Masterclass, we will look at paintings which are perhaps lesser-known but which serve as good case studies to understand the different genres of painting of the Dutch Golden Age.
